“This Is Your House”: Michigan Division Surprises Marine Corps Veteran With New Home

PulteGroup’s Michigan Division recently had the honor of surprising U.S. Marine Corps Lance Corporal Daniel Rea with life-changing news. He and his four children would be receiving a brand-new mortgage-free home through a partnership with Building Homes for Heroes.

For Daniel, service has always been about putting others first.

After following in his brother's footsteps, who served in the Army, Daniel joined the Marines in 2010 and later deployed to Afghanistan, where he sustained life-changing injuries. Following his military service, Daniel has focused on rebuilding, raising his four children as a single father, and working toward a more stable future for his family.

What Daniel believed was a final interview with The Michigan Division and Building Homes for Heroes quickly turned into something much bigger.

During an emotional gathering with his children by his side, Daniel shared what stable housing would mean for their family after years of temporary living situations and crowded spaces. Speaking through tears, he explained that despite every challenge, his children “don’t complain” and are simply grateful to be together.

Then came the surprise.

Presented with what seemed like a simple gift, Daniel slowly realized the truth. PulteGroup’s Michigan Division would build and donate a new Pulte home for him and his children.

“I didn’t think this type of thing existed,” Daniel said moments after learning the news. “It’s finally going to be nice to come home with them and not have to worry where we’re going to sleep next year.”

The moment was filled with disbelief, gratitude, and overwhelming emotion. Not just for Daniel and his children, but for everyone in the room privileged enough to witness it.
