"This is a dream of a lifetime for me and my family,” said U.S. Army Sgt. Luis Lugo. The home is one of 20 PulteGroup’s Built to Honor program plans to deliver to deserving veterans across the nation in 2014 in collaboration with Operation FINALLY HOME. “We can't believe we are home owners. We are so thankful to everyone involved."
Sgt. Lugo, his wife Louise and three-year-old son were surprised that the new three-bedroom 1,930-square foot home is fully furnished. Pulte worked with Lugo to ensure the home best fits their needs, but kept surprises for move-in day. The home is in the Mesa del Sol master plan, minutes from the hospital where Lugo continues physical therapy.
“So many of our valued trade contractors and suppliers donated their skills and materials to make this a wonderful place to live for Sgt. Lugo and his family,” said Jay Gillilan, president of PulteGroup’s New Mexico Division, adding that the generosity of more than 50 different local contractors helped build the home. “It’s very special for all the Pulte employees who volunteered to get involved that this home dedication is on Valentine’s Day, as this is the ultimate gift of love in honor of his service to our country.”
U.S. Army Sgt. Luis Lugo, who moved to New Mexico as a toddler, joined the service in 2007 and served in Iraq and Afghanistan until 2010. He suffered multiple injuries three years ago when he was struck by an improvised land mine that forced his left leg to be amputated. He is the recipient of The Purple Heart and many other military commendations. Lugo was informed in August at an Albuquerque Isotopes game that he was selected to receive the mortgage-free home.
Pulte Homes and Mesa del Sol donated the cost of the lot and Pulte and local contractors built and donated the home in collaboration with Operation FINALLY HOME, a nonpartisan/nonprofit organization focused on helping veterans and their families transition to the home front by addressing one of their most pressing needs – a home to call their own.
“It is a moving experience to witness the gift of home ownership being bestowed on such a deserving veteran and his family,” said Rusty Carroll, executive director of Operation FINALLY HOME. “This effort led by PulteGroup’s Built to Honor program is an example of a company bringing a community together to honor and show support of one of our nation’s veterans.”
