U.S. Army Veteran and Family Receive Keys to New Home in Michigan

PulteGroup’s Built to Honor program donates home to Purple Heart recipient

YPSILANTI, Mich., Aug. 29, 2014 — A crowd of local contractors, neighbors and members of the community celebrated as U.S. Army Sgt. Christopher Hemwall, his wife Valerie and son Colton, received the keys to their new Pulte home at Creek Side Village South in Ypsilanti Township today. This mortgage-free home is part of PulteGroup’s Built to Honor program which aims to donate 20 homes to veterans throughout the country in 2014.

The PulteGroup Team welcome Sgt. Hemwall and his family to their new home in Ypsilanti Township, Mich., along with Operation Finally Home

“We are so grateful for all the sacrifices Sgt. Hemwall has made to serve our country. We hope this home will help improve the quality of life for him and his family and provide them joy and security for many years to come,” said Brandon Jones, president of the Company’s Michigan Division.

Pulte Homes and local contractors, vendors and housing partners donated the land, labor and materials, and worked with the Hemwalls to customize the new home and address Sgt. Hemwall’s specific needs. The project is in partnership with Operation FINALLY HOME, a 501(c)(3) organization that honors wounded, ill and injured veterans and widows of fallen soldiers with new custom-built, mortgage-free homes.

“Operation FINALLY HOME is honored to partner with PulteGroup to help ease the struggles of our nation’s brave heroes,” said Rusty Carroll, vice president of Operation FINALLY HOME. “We cannot thank Christopher enough for his service and we are so excited for the Hemwall family to start the next chapter of their lives and begin building happy memories in this new home.”

Born and raised in Monroe, Michigan, Sgt. Hemwall enlisted in the Army shortly after graduating high school in 2008. He was first stationed in Germany, and conducted a NATO mission in Romania to aid in training the Romanian Army in maneuver operations. He was later deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom where he received gunshot wounds to his back and legs, resulting in a lower leg amputation. Hemwall has received several commendations, including the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medals, NATO ISAF Service Ribbon, and several others.
