U.S. Army Soldier Receives a New Home in Ypsilanti

PulteGroup’s Built to Honor Program Surprises Local Family

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich., May 5, 2014 — More than 100 people were on hand when PulteGroup made a surprise announcement over the weekend to U.S. Army Sergeant Christopher Hemwall, 24, of Monroe, that he is the recipient of a newly-built home in the Pulte Homes community of Creek Side Village South in Ypsilanti Township.  This mortgage-free home is part of the Company’s Built to Honor program where 20 homes will be built for wounded veterans and their families throughout the country.  The project is in partnership with Operation FINALLY HOME

Born and raised in Monroe, Michigan, Sgt. Hemwall enlisted in the Army shortly after graduating high school in 2008.  He was first stationed in Germany, and conducted a NATO mission in Romania to aid in training the Romanian Army in maneuver operations.  He was later deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom where he received gunshot wounds to his back and legs, resulting in a lower leg amputation.  Hemwall has received several commendations, including The Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medals, NATO ISAF Service Ribbon, and several others.

“Christopher Hemwall has served our country with pride and we hope this new home will help ease his struggles and provide his family many future happy memories,” said Brandon Jones, Michigan division president of PulteGroup.  “We are honored to participate with Operation FINALLY HOME to help put this brave veteran and his family in a better place.”

Pulte Homes and local contractors, vendors and housing partners are donating the land, labor and materials for the new 1,683 sq. ft. home.  This is the second home that the PulteGroup Michigan Division has built and donated to a veteran.  The first home was delivered to Sgt. Davin Dumar of Macomb in early 2013.

With the surprise announcement made, PulteGroup will work with the family to customize the home and address any unique needs so that they can move into the single-family home sometime this summer.  Hemwall, his wife, Valerie and 17-month old son, Colton applied for the new home through Operation FINALLY HOME, a 501(c)(3) organization that honors wounded, ill and injured veterans and widows of fallen soldiers with new custom-built, mortgage-free homes.

PulteGroup, which builds new homes under its Pulte Homes and Del Webb brands in Metro Detroit, is donating the lot and construction of the home and is coordinating the donation of all materials and labor.  The three bedroom and two bath home is in a beautiful community, which features a large community park with covered picnic area and BBQ.  Situated amidst apple orchards, golf courses and parks, the community is in a great location to raise a family and is near the Hemwall’s family and friends.
